Trustees Needed

One in four people in the UK will experience mental health illness and many more of us know and care for people who do (NHS, 2019).

 

We know that there is rising demand and diminishing resources for our mental health services.  Like us, we are sure this is a cause that you care about,  but would you be willing to offer a little of your time to do something about it?  Would you be part of a Christian charity making a difference in the lives of those in the local community, many of whom would not be able to access a counselling service without either a long wait and/or a costly fee?  Would you like to develop new skills, experience, networks and friendships?

 

New Hope is seeking one or more volunteers to join and support the existing team of trustees in overseeing the running of our charity.  We are keen to attract new team members who are passionate about our vision and who may bring skills, experience or connections gained through varied backgrounds or experiences.

 

New Hope Christian Counselling is a charity based in Warwick, where we have been successfully delivering support to a broad range of clients in the local community for over 8 years.  We provide a confidential face-to-face counselling service to people in need from a wide range of backgrounds and for many issues including stress, anxiety, depression, trauma and relationship difficulties. 

New Hope has experienced an exciting period of growth to meet the demand for its services.  In the last financial year New Hope counselled 283 clients (an increase of 31% from 2018) through a dedicated team of around 35 volunteer counsellors, across four locations in Warwick, Leamington Spa, Kenilworth and Stratford-upon-Avon. We employ a team of 7 extremely passionate and committed part-time staff, and there are currently 5 trustee/directors.

We have a trustee board that comprises of the chair, the treasurer, the secretary and two other trustees.  We have a vacancy for one trustee, and with a number of trustees reaching the end of their term over the next twelve months, we are seeking to strengthen the team through the appointment of more than one trustee who share our vision and commitment to help those in need in the local community.

We aim to show God’s love by offering counselling to people in need within the local area, who are finding it hard to cope with psychological or emotional challenges.  Our counsellors seek to help people, regardless of their beliefs or financial situation, to find solutions and discover new hope for the future.

The Role:

At its simplest, the role of the trustees is to govern the assets and resources from donors, safeguard them and apply them for charitable purposes as declared in the objects of New Hope.   The trustee board must always act in the best interests of New Hope, and must act as a group and not as individuals.

The duties of our trustees are to:

  • Ensure that New Hope complies with its governing document (its Articles of Association), charity law, company law and other relevant legislation or regulations.

  • Ensure that New Hope pursues its objects as defined in its governing document which are to promote and protect the mental health of the public, in particular those living in Warwick, Leamington Spa, Stratford on Avon and the surrounding area through the provision of counselling and support for people in need.

  • Maintain proper financial control and ensure that New Hope applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects.

  • Ensure the financial stability of New Hope.

  • To set and maintain the vision of New Hope and contribute to the strategic direction of New Hope.

  • To oversee the creation and review of relevant internal policies, and regularly review risk

  • To safeguard the good name and Christian Ethos of New Hope.

  • To support the manager of New Hope and review their performance.

In addition to these duties, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions.  This may involve leading discussions, providing advice or occasionally being part of a sub-committee focusing on a particular task.

Due to the small size of our charity, all trustees are also involved in some capacity as volunteers, occasionally supporting the management with interviews and appraisals, and in other areas where their skills are needed (for example in finance, IT or HR).  Any support that trustees were able to offer in organising or supporting fundraising events would be welcomed.  

The time commitment can vary and flexibility is always appreciated, but it is on average 2-3 hours per week, including meetings.

  • Trustees are expected to attend all board meetings, which are held quarterly on weekday evenings and last around two hours. 

  • Occasionally, trustees meet for supplementary two-hour evening meetings in between quarterly meetings, in order to progress particular projects or discuss strategy or policy.

  • New Hope will hold an annual away day for all staff and trustees (on a Saturday).

  • All meetings are held in Warwick or the surrounding area.

  • Trustees are invited and encouraged to occasionally visit the premises where we counsel, especially in Warwick, and are invited to bi-annual CPD training events (on Saturdays) to meet volunteer counsellors.  The latter are not obligatory and trustees tend to join the team for a lunch break, rather than participate in training which is focused on counselling practice.

 

Person Specification:

It is essential that each trustee has:

  • A commitment to the vision of New Hope and a passion to get involved in this cause

  • An active Christian faith, being a regular attender of a church

  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort

  • Integrity

  • Good independent judgement and critical thinking

  • A clear communicator with a willingness to question and be questioned, and to speak their mind

  • An ability to work effectively as part of a team

The following are skills, knowledge and experience that are desirable.  They are wide-ranging (and non-exhaustive!), and candidates who feel they meet the requirements in only one or two areas should not be put-off from applying or discussing the opportunity with our chair of trustees.

  • Experience of charity and voluntary sector and/or social enterprise

  • Organisational/strategy development

  • Income generation and financial management

  • Charity impact measurement and evaluation

  • Building collaborative partnerships

  • Networking and influencing skills

  • Human resource management

  • IT and digital media

  • PR, communication or marketing

  • Experience within the health sector

Appointed trustees are subject to a DBS check and serve a three-year term as a trustee with the opportunity to stand for re-election for a second term.

More information about New Hope:

We offer our service to anyone in the local area who feels they would benefit from counselling, and we will not refuse anyone counselling based on an inability to make a financial contribution.  There are no set fees for counselling, but we operate a donation system which enables New Hope to offer affordable counselling.  There is a bursary fund for those who would not ordinarily be able to access our service and clients are asked to give what they can afford.  We operate within our Christian Ethos and are affiliated to the Association for Christian Counsellors (ACC), however those of any or no faith can access our services, and there is no faith content to the counselling unless this is something the client particularly wants to discuss.

We keep our costs low by relying on volunteer counsellors, all of whom are either qualified to diploma or degree level, or who are trainee counsellors with a minimum of two years’ training.  All counsellors are registered with a national counselling organisation such as the ACC or the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy).

We are a well-established and respected charity locally, partnering with other organisations who deliver services to the poor in the area.
